If you’re curious about the hype around facial oils, but also kind of apprehensive about actually putting oil on your face, worried it will clog your pores and give you pimples, then we are here for you!

Since the time of Cleopatra women have been using plant derived oil in their beauty regime, primarily to keep their hair, nails and skin healthy and hydrated. Oil should not be treated like the enemy when it comes to skin, but it does depend on the oil.

The higher quality oils, especially those that mimic our skin's natural oils, won't cause your skin to breakout or your pores to clog. In fact they will actually work to regulate your own oil production, being able to penetrate deeply into the skin, working to prevent these issues occurring in the first place. This is particularly the case with jojoba oil which has identical properties to the skin's sebum.

You do however want to avoid oils containing petrochemicals like mineral oil, or synthetic fragrance. Natural is always best when it comes to putting oils on your skin, especially for dry and sensitive skin.

FACE OILS NOURISH YOUR SKIN AND FIGHT THE SIGNS OF AGEING

As we age our skin decreases its natural oil production. We lose the natural moisture barrier and the skin tends to dry out easier. When this occurs, the skin becomes dehydrated, flaky and prone to wrinkles.

Facial oils help strengthen the moisture barrier. They are able to penetrate deeply and repair barrier functionality to lock in hydration due to high concentrations of fatty acids, anti-inflammatories and fat soluble vitamins and antioxidants.

The Epidermis of the skin (outer most layer) is oil based. This layer is made up of fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides, all of which are found in natural plant based oils. So if you use “like minded” ingredients on your skin, it will readily accept and use these oils as though the skin produced them itself!

These fatty acids are also great at combating inflammation and can help treat skin dryness, eczema and dermatitis.

INGREDIENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Antioxidant rich oils like Acai Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Rosehip Oil, Chia Seed Oil, Algae extracts and Raspberry seed oil. Antioxidants are free-radical scavenging, and protect the skin from UV rays and the signs of premature aging.

Vitamin rich oil like Avocado Oil (Vitamin A, B1, B2, D and E), Jojoba Oil (Vitamin E), Rosehip oil (Vitamin A) and Pomegranate oil (Vitamin C and B5)

Oils rich in essential fatty acids like Evening Primrose Oil, Rosehip Oil, Apricot Oil, Argan Oil, Chia Seed and Acai oil.

All these wonderful ingredients can be found in the NOURISH Superfood Facial Oil from SEEH Skincare.

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID

Mineral oils are actually petroleum based products. They can be found in some moisturisers and form a protective barrier to lock in the moisture but are not absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin.

Synthetic fragrance oils can irritate and dry out sensitive skin prone to irritation.

Comedogenic oils, like coconut oil and wheat germ oil, can cause breakouts and clogged pores.
